Mushroom Inoculation Workshop

Hands-On-Learning Workshop!

Participants will learn about outdoor Shiitake and Oyster mushroom log cultivation. This includes everything from log selection to harvesting the mushrooms.

Participants will be inoculating logs so they must have a good back, have the ability to stand for two hours, and the ability to lift/carry 30 pounds. Wear closed-toe shoes, no jewelry, hair tied back and clothing that can get dirty.

This a free, active learning experience. Limited to 5 participants.

Appropriate for 13 years and older but youth must be accompanied by an adult and both must be active participants.

Simply send us a FB message and state that you want to ACTIVELY participate. We will confirm that we received your message. The first five people that contact us will be sent additional information so they’re prepared for the fun morning!

World Wildlife Day at our Farm

World Wildlife Day is celebrated every year on March 3rd. However we’re celebrating this day on Monday, March 4th.

You are welcome to walk our trails and take photos of wildlife and their natural habitats at our farm. You will receive a trail map that will assist you on your self-guided experience. This is appropriate for youth. The trails are uneven and closed-toe shoes are recommended along with a walking stick.

This is a free event. No restroom will be available. Farm tours will not be given because we will be working.

Participants will be inoculating logs so they must have a good back, have the ability to stand for two hours, and the ability to lift/carry 30 pounds. Wear closed-toe shoes, no jewelry, hair tied back and clothing that can get dirty.

We are offering many children’s activities through guest booths including York County 4-H, Piedmont Music Therapy, and RideAbility. Artists include NanaZ’s Quilts, Sally’s Sandcastings and Vanessa’s Divine Creations. You can also fish in stocked pond for free (catch and release only with single hook. Bring your own pole and bait), geocache, and disc-golf (Bring your own discs).

Nanaz’s Quilting Zone | Nanaz’s Quilting Zone makes all kinds of quilts, provides embroidery services and all kinds of homemade crafts made from all kinds of materials.

Piedmont Music Therapy, LLC | Visit PMT’s booth to meet and greet with one of our music therapy staff members. We’ll have lots of instruments to explore plus be available to answer questions about music therapy and adapted music instruction for children and adults. There’ll be ribbon rings available for purchase, too. We’ll raffle a basket of music related treats to one of our booth’s visitors. Plan on enjoying nature and exploring meaningful rhythms at our tent hosted at J & J Family Farm! DEMO | Musical instruments will be available for exploring during both days!

Vanessa’s Divine Creations | SUNDAY ONLY Homemade jams, jellies, sweet and savory preserves made from fruits that come from locally grown farms within a 50-mile radius of Gastonia. The savory preserves are made from vegetables grown in Vanessa’s home garden. All products are made fresh with the minimal preservants as possible. Outdoor Mushroom Cultivation Workshop

Learn about outdoor log and bed mushroom cultivation from strain selection and inoculation to harvesting and storage. Understand the connection between mushroom cultivation and a healthy managed forest. Appropriate for all knowledge levels. You can even have the option to purchase an inoculated log that contains certified organic Shiitake spawn! This workshop is made possible through a partnership with Clemson University and Catawba Farm and Food Coalition. Celebrate National Plant a Flower Day by visiting our farm and seeing many native flowers that you can consider using in your own landscape. These include full sun and full shade plants. Homeschool groups are welcome. This is an opportunity for you to have the children learn how plants grow and even have an activity such as planting a seed in a dixie cup that they can bring home and watch it grow. Want to experience farm activities? Fantastic because we need YOU! Experiences include raising a hoop house, inoculating mushroom beds, painting beehives, cleaning wood duck boxes, painting picnic tables, building compost bins, and more. All skill levels welcome because this is a learning experience! All ages are welcome but youth under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and they will be paired with appropriate tasks. Meals – Yes! We’re providing a light breakfast and big lunch for all volunteers. We will have vegetarian options. For this reason, WE NEED YOU TO RSVP cause nobody wants to work on an empty stomach. To RSVP – click on the event as ‘going’ then send us a PM to say the quantity of people and if anyone has a food allergy. If youth are coming, please let me know so I can make sure we have enough activities for kiddos and fun foods for them. Protection and conservation for wildlife is a key element of our farm. Come photograph and view our diverse bird population on the 16th Annual National Bird Day – Friday, January 5th. What to expect: We will have a bonfire if it is cold. This photo was taken in January 2016 but January 2017 we were in shortsleeve shirts and jeans. You will have access to a restroom. There are many walking trails in the woods. The ground is uneven and waterfowl frequent our pond. What we request: Capture the beauty of birds with your camera and share them with us or on your FB page tagging our farm. It is important to share images of birds in their habitat. What to bring: Comfortable layered clothing, sneakers/hiking shoes, camera, binoculars & a picnic lunch. Cost: Free

Let’s celebrate together! Friday, November 17th is “National Take A Hike Day”. Between the hours of 10am – 2pm you are welcome to come to our farm and walk the nature trails using self-guided maps. This is appropriate for all ages and sneakers or hiking shoes are recommended due to the uneven terrain. We have outdoor tables so bring a picnic and have fun!

Hand-crafted items include bat houses and carpenter bee traps. Preseason orders will be taken for King Stropharia mushrooms and firewood deliveries.

ARTISAN Piedmont Music Therapy, LLC – interactive musician PMT, LLC plans to return and create live music throughout the weekend! There will be a collection of musical instruments for folks to play and explore. PMT Team Members will share live music on flute, guitar and percussion. Visit them to make music together and learn more about private lessons and music therapy.
